I have always avoided going to the gym if I didn’t have a friend to go with me. When I joined Figures last Spring I was most intrigued by the variety of classes offered each day and thought that all of the options might motivate me to work out more often. Nervous and unconvinced, I set myself up in the back corner and struggled through my first Power Intervals class. What I discovered that day was a group of strong and supportive ladies, an upbeat environment, and encouraging instructors. More determined than ever before, I started attending every strength and conditioning class I could. After spending time in multiple classes and a having a few personal training sessions what I was really interested in were the Small Group Trainings that met one day each week. I didn’t think that it would be possible to join a Small Group with my frequently changing work schedule, but finally this summer I signed up for one and hoped for the best. I was surprised at how easy it was to work with the other girls in my group to attend all the sessions or reschedule the ones that were on days I had to work. I spent my entire childhood on sports teams and frequently going to classes and being in multiple Small Groups has allowed me to make many great friends and remember the feeling of being part of a team.
I came to Figures with the intention of becoming stronger and increasing my endurance for the activities I love to do outside of the gym including skiing, hiking, and paddle boarding. By working hard to achieve my original goal through Small Groups and classes I developed a new love for strength training. Before finding Figures and my strength coach, Maria, I had never touched a barbell and had very minimal knowledge of weight lifting. Focusing on strength training has opened my eyes to how much potential I have and has led me to gain more confidence in my physical abilities. Flexible dieting and being conscious of my macronutrient intake has only increased the results I have seen so far and has also made a huge change in my body composition.
I feel stronger than I ever have. This is the first time I have found a gym setting that has made working out exciting and has sparked a new enthusiasm for fitness. Since starting I have not once thought of going to a class or a training session as a chore. I am always eager to get to the training room to lift, run, and jump with friends, and this uplifting and inspiring community is what keeps me coming back week after week.
